Cities are enormous consumers of electricity. The highest electricity consumption takes place in cities and this consumption is responsible for approximately 30% of CO2 emissions to atmosphere.

In a context in which only 32% of the electricity consumed is generated using renewable energies and around 14% of the energy supplied is lost during transmission in urban distribution networks, the great energy challenges facing 21st century cities is clear:

  • To improve energy efficiency in electricity grid transmission and distribution.
  • To achieve greater integration of renewable energies into the electricity grid.
  • To reduce CO2 emissions to atmosphere resulting from electricity consumption.
